PROJECT: GRAIN TERMINAL IN POTI, GEORGIA
CLIENT: EUROPEAN BANK FOR RECONSTRUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
COMPLETED: SEPTEMBER 1994

Consulting services and procurement assistance for the development of a grain handling and storage terminal at the Port of Poti in Georgia.

An overall economic and technical assessment of the possible options for building a grain imports port was carried out.

Triton's services covered six main domains:

  1. Perform an overall economic and technical assessment of existing assets and review possible options for building a grain terminal.

  2. Provide recommendations for various possible variant structures for the project including phasing for short, medium and long-term investment.

  3. Perform a cost benefit analysis of the project and propose a tariff structure for financing the project.

  4. Perform an Environmental Impact Analysis of the project.

  5. Define the project elements of the preferred variant and provide cost estimates on the basis of relevant international tenders.

  6. Prepare procurement documents and assist in managing the procurement process.

The project also envisaged the construction of a 20000m2 container storage area, a rail shunting yard and a 500t floating Rail Link-span as part of a subproject to establish a Ra-Ra transport corridor between eastern and western Black Sea ports. The link-span concept and detailed engineering design were subsequently prepared by TRITON on the basis of a follow on contract funder by the E.C.-TACIS, to service the 24000t Ukrainian Ra-Ra ferries operating in the Varna–Poti and Ilyichevsk-Poti routes. The facility was completed in 1990 and is currently able to load ships with 1.5km long rail-car mounted cargo. The construction was given class approval from Lloyds Register and operates successfully since April 1999.
