SITE SELECTION AND DESIGN OF TWO COAL TERMINALS
CONSTRUCTION COST : 40million US $
CLIENT : MINISTRY OF TOWN PLANNING, ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC WORKS OF GREECE

Selection of two sites for the development of coal terminals in the island of Crete and
Astakos town in North - Western Greece.
The project involved research of possible sites for the construction of coal handling
terminals, evaluation and final selection of two sites, in Southern and Northern Greece.
Data for world coal production, seaborn trade in Europe, and East Mediterranean imports
and exports have been analysed in order to predict the future demands for coal in Greece
and the East Mediterranean and establish the design criteria for the terminals. A
feasibility study followed taking into account the main coal consumers, (the Public
Corporation and the Cement Industry). The study findings indicated the optimum throughputs
and transhipment volumes. The following stages of the design included preliminary and
final design of the two coal handling terminals at the selected sites.
