FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE COMBINED TRANSPORT CORRIDOR BETWEEN GREECE ITALY
and GERMANY
DESIGN BUDGET : A' PHASE 311.000 ECUS
B' PHASE 157.800 ECUS
CLIENT: GENERAL DIRECTORATE VII

The object of the study (undertaken jointly with ADK Consulting Engineers
and COMBIMARE) was to examine the technical reasonability and the economic feasibility of
the establishment of a multimodal combined transportation corridor between Greece and
Northern Europe (with Germany as referred node) for unaccompanied units (semitrailers and
swap bodies) combining road-naval-rail segments with participation of operators of all
modes (trucks owners, transportation companies, forwarders, shipping companies, railways).
After the completion of the first phase which included market research, feasibility
assessment and selection of ports (Patra on the Greek side and Brindisi on the Italian
side) for the following pilot phase, the second phase included a more in depth analysis of
traffic flows and feasibility of the combined transport as well as monitoring, assessment
and evaluation of the results of the pilot operation starting March 1994.
