SHORING AND PROTECTION WORKS FOR A SUBMARINE
FIBRE OPTIC CABLE
CONSTRUCTION COST : US$ 4 million
CLIENT : HELLENIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS ORGANIZATION

Design of shoring and protection works for a submarine fibre optic cable within
the context of the connection programme of the islands of the Aegean sea with fibre optic
cables.
The design was implemented in two phases : Phase One connected the town of Vravrona and
the islands of Syros, Mykonos, Chios and Lesvos and was sponsored by SIEMENS while the
second phase connecting Kavala,Thasos and Limnos was sponsored by ALCATEL CABLES GREECE
S.A.
The study involved design for temporary mooring of the cable ship as well as shoring and
protection works for the safe installation of the submarine cable near the shoreline.
Burying of the cable along its largest part was effected using a self mobile sea bottom
trenching machine.
Extensive geophysical investigations were carried out using side-scanning
sonar and boomers and a complete submarine survey of the
sea bottom including video tapes and photographs was also prepared by TRITON.
