keramoti.jpg (22611 bytes)A ship scrap yard enabling simultaneous cutting of two 50,000 DWT Ships. The project consists of an offshore artificial island connected to the shore by an access way. The island includes two berths for berthing ships of up to 50,000 DWT, a scrap yard ramp for keel demolition, a scrap loading terminal to handle bulk carriers of up to 10,000 DWT together with all auxiliary facilities and scrap processing units, including shear machines, overhead and gantry cranes. Cutting, sorting and temporary storage of scrap material will take place on the island. An extensive environmental study was carried out to define the impact of the project on the near-by fisheries, the continuation of the littoral processes along the coastal line, in view of the presence of the island, and the avoidance of the air and water pollution in the intensively cultivated wider area. This study indicated that the extensive environmental protection works were required and these were appended to the engineering design. The project also includes the construction of a steel furnace and rolling mill on the adjacent mainland coast.
