Extension of Pier No. 6 of the commercial port of Thessaloniki
Design of a 600m quaywall extension of pier No 6 of the commercial port of Thessaloniki.
The pier will be used as a container handling as well as bulk loading and unloading
terminal. Due to the nature of the seabed substrata, preloading of the foundation area
with an artificial embankment is forethought in order to speed up the consolidation
process.
The quaywall will be constructed with the use of floating box
caissons, which will be manufactured on site. After launching of each concrete caisson
at its predetermined position along the quaywall, its cells will be filled with granular
material up to the top serving the purpose of preloading the foundation. After all
settlements have subsided, the fill will be removed to half the caisson's height and the
cells will be sealed with precast concrete slabs.
