Project:Technical assistance to the Supervising Authority for the reclamation, landscaping & development, of a coastal area of 60.000m2, adjacent to the old Mykonos Port
Location:Mykonos, Greece
Date:2009 - 2012
Since the early ’90s it became obvious that Mykonos Old Port could not cope with the ever rising traffic volumes of ferries, cruise ships, day-cruisers, high speed vessels etc. that call at Mykonos on a daily basis. After the design & construction of the New Port for ferries & cruise-ships at Tourlos Bay, TRITON Consulting Engineers has been awarded another large scale infrastructure project in Mykonos island - the conceptual and detail engineering design for the reclamation, landscaping & development of a 60.000 sqm coastal area, adjacent to the Old Mykonos Port primarily to create land for a car park for the town’s needs and longer F/B embarkation queues.
A project of such a magnitude and so close to the town is difficult to blend in with the small-scale urban character of the town of Mykonos. For this reason the design provides for the excavation of a large channel, dug in the landfill along an axis, parallel to the shoreline. This gave the effect that the reclaimed area appeared detached from the town’s coastline and the illusion of an islet to the the observer. The channel is used as a shelter for small fishing vessels and sailing club boats.
Furthermore, TRITON has been engaged as Technical Consultant by the South Aegean Regional Authority, for the duration of the project implementation, monitoring its progress, oversee the quality control and assist the supervising Authority. The project Included:
• Reclamation of a 60.000 sqm coastal area, along with the fortification of its seaward perimeter and construction of quaywalls in excess of 800m long.
• Development of a fishing boat shelter for 200 vessels and watersports.
• Construction of a Ferry passenger terminal building to serve the adjacent Old Port with a handling capacity of 1000 passengers/h.
• Provision of a new building for the Port Authority.
• Provision of a parking area for 550 vehicles and a bus Terminal.
• Landscaping of the overall area
• Development of Mykonos Yacht Club building.
• Construction of a fish market, and other related buildings for municipal and commercial activities
• Provision of recreation areas, sun shelters, walkways, cyclists’ lanes, etc.
TRITON’s scope of work included:
• Supervising work implementation and project management
• Quality assurance
• Provision of Shop Drawings
• Conducting quality control tests
• Project Documentation (record keeping, digital photo documentation etc)
