MULTI BUOY MOORING SYSTEM AT PHYRA BAY
CONSTRUCTION COST : US$ 1 million
CLIENT : CYCLADES PREFECTURE AUTHORITY

phyra.jpg (37330 bytes)Design of a deep-water mooring system at Phyra Bay Santorini at a water depth of 200 metres. The system is capable of handling 4 ships of 10,000 GRT simultaneously using only two large buoys. Each buoy was anchored using one line to the sea bed and one line connected to the two riser-chains of the buoys, at a level of - 18.0 m below the free sea surface. Due to the restricted area of Phyra Bay the simultaneous accommodation of 4 large ships required the smallest possible deflection from the rest position of the mooring buoys under all loading conditions.  The coupled mooring system meets the above requirements providing a significant reduction in the allowable deflections of the buoys compared to those of the independently anchored buoys.
