ZAKYNTHOS RESIDENTIAL MARINA
CONSTRUCTION COST: US$ 4 M.
CLIENT: NATIONAL TOURISM ORGANIZATION OF GREECE
Design
of Harbour Works and Residential Buildings. The project involved the design of a
residential area, consisting of four artificial islands with a total reclaimed area of
51,OOO m2 next to the port of Zakynthos.
Residential buildings, mainly terraced houses, bungalows and maisonettes with their own
mooring facilities, a luxury 1,500 bed hotel, a cultural centre, sports, recreational and
service facilities will be constructed on the four islands. The marina will be able to
accommodate yachts and will offer service and repair facilities. A feasibility study
together with market and economic studies followed a detailed program of offshore bore
holes, topographic, geological, aerial and environmental surveys, the latter with emphasis
on water quality control, marine biology and impact assessment for the protected species
Caretta-Carreta (sea turtle).
The architectural and engineering design took into account the results of an earthquake
study, as Zakynthos island is situated in an active seismic zone. A detailed environmental
study was carried out to assess the impact of the marina on the coastal zone and on the
city of Zakynthos as well as on the landscape of the wider area in order to define the
necessary environmental protection measures.
